The prototype worked perfectly.
The test-group of people having Ménière’s disease were thrilled.
They finally had a treatment for the symptoms that can appear so randomly.
The doctors and inventors were eager to put in into production immediately.
There was only one problem.
The users did not bring the product with them.
I looked at the product and how it worked from the point of the user.
And quickly understood that no one wanted to feel sick.
And a sterile white standard square box did just that.
Apart from being simply unpractical.
Instead I designed the casing with soft lines and a sophisticated matt black exterior.
We re-arranged the component to optimize the size making it half the height.
And made the accessories to fit inside the case instead of outside.
We simplified the interface to make it intuitive also under stress and dizziness.
Suddenly the users were happy to have the product in their bag or briefcase.
The users did no longer need to excuse themselves.
What I did was to not only think about the 1% of the time when the product was in use,
but also the 99% of the time when it was not.
