Design is about telling a story. Good design has something to communicate, something beyond its function. To design something is to work at several levels at the same time: to solve a problem, to think of manufacturability, economics and ecology, but also to tell a story about the product's purpose, position and intention. To reflect a business brand, to be a tool to define quality and to attend to the needs and joy of the user. A good designer needs to understand the context and consciously work with what story to communicate through the design of the product. More or less clearly.
Design handlar om att berätta en historia. God design har något att kommunicera, någonting bortom sin funktion. Att designa handlar om att arbeta på flera nivåer; att lösa ett problem, att tänka på producerbarhet, ekonomi och ekologi, men också att för användaren berätta en historia om produktens syfte och mål. Att spegla ett varumärke och en ambitionsnivå, att vara ett vertyg för att definiera kvalitet och omsorg om användaren. En duktig designer behöver förstå sammanhang och medveten jobba med vilken historia man vill att produkten ska berätta. Mer eller mindre tydligt.
